Vintage
Jewelry Tip Of The Month
- Aluminum Jewelry
17/11/04
The
first pieces of aluminum jewelry were
introduced in 1851. Because it was rare at the time,
it was more expensive than gold! However, its lack of
richness and weight made it unsuccessful in the marketplace.

Vintage
Jewelry Tip Of The Month
- Older Jewelry Reference Books
03/11/04
Older
books on vintage jewelry can still be very helpful
even if the price guides are outdated. You can use them
to identify and find out information about your jewelry
as well as study items in pictures that you may not
find in newer books. They are just one additional weapon
you can arm yourself with on your hunt for vintage jewelry.

Vintage
Jewelry Tip Of The Month - Metals
in Vintage Jewelry
25/10/04
Nickel
Silver or German Silver does not contain any silver
at all. It is used in costume jewelry as a substitute
for silver and is often plated with silver. If you see
the mark EPNS on jewelry it means that it is Electroplated
Nickel Silver. It was invented in the early 19th century.

Vintage
Jewelry Tip Of The Month
- Factors Affecting Value
14/10/04
There
are many things that affect the value of vintage jewelry.
Age is not the most important factor. Above all, with
vintage costume jewelry in particular, is condition.
Other important considerations are rarity, craftsmanship,
size, current fashion trends, geographic location and
the venue the piece is being sold in.

Vintage
Jewelry Tip Of The Month
- Internet Searches
03/10/04
Searching
the internet for vintage jewelry can be a frustrating
task. The trick is to think like a search engine. You
may want to find vintage venetian necklaces so you type
in the term "venetian glass bead necklace"
into Google. This brings up a lot of information about
bead artists and modern beaded jewelry which is fun
to look at but not what you want. For any term that
you think might be vague to a search engine, type your
term and then "vintage jewelry" in quotes
and you will find that your search has been narrowed
down to give you a more relevant result.

- Vintage Brooches
22/09/04
In
case you haven't heard, vintage brooches are in!
Thank goodness because there are so many beautiful
designs by talented designers that it would be a shame
to let them just sit on the shelf collecting dust. For
suggestions on what kind to buy and how to wear them
see our new "Hot Fashion For Fall and Winter 2004
resource page featuring vintage
brooches.

Jewelry Tip Of The Month
- Jewelry Repair
14/09/04
Replacing
rhinestones in vintage jewelry can be a difficult
task. It is important that you use stones that are as
close to the original ones as possible. Although it
may be tempting to use a different size or color because
you have it on hand, this likely will devalue the piece
because it takes away from the original designer's intention
of how the piece should look. Please see the bottom
of our page on specialty
stones for some online resources for repair
parts and services.

Jewelry
Tip Of The Month:
Elster and DeLizza Jewelry
20/08/04
Jewelry
produced
by Elster and DeLizza (sometimes called Juliana)
can be identified by the use of "5 link" bracelets,
open-back settings, art glass stones, 3D design, dangles,
"rivets" used in construction, use of a variety
of different stones in one piece, and an abundance of
thin navettes. The presence of these characteristics
do not guarantee a D&E find but they can help direct
your hunt!

Jewelry
Tip Of The Month:
what's vermeil?
12/07/04
The
French term "Vermeil" means that gold
has been plated onto silver, bronze or copper and is
pronounced "vair-may." This term was
originally used only to describe gold plated sterling
